Announcements
Scholarship for Virginia Tech Students
Applications for the Pamplin Leader Scholarship are now available.
 
This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one student from each public high school in Virginia who has applied to Virginia Tech, is admitted and accepts the offer of admission.
 
The scholarship is open to students applying to all majors. The Pamplin Leaders seek students with a 3.75 GPA or higher, who have a commitment to community service and who have leadership experience.
 
Interested students should pick up an application in Counseling. The deadline date is Monday, February 6, 2012.
Pre-Law Conference at CNU
The Virginia State Bar Education of Lawyers Section is hosting a High School Pre-Law conference at Regent University Law School on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 

The conference is intended for high school students and parents who wish to learn about the legal profession, law school and the law school admissions process. Speakers include practicing lawyers, judges, law professors, law school admissions officers, undergraduate pre-law advisors and law students. The event is free, but students and parents should register in advance. To register, go to regent.edu/prelaw and fill out the form. Registration should be completed by Saturday, Feb. 11.

STEM Essay Contest
Air Force STEM 2020 challenge.

Winners of the STEM 2020 Challenge will be invited to Washington D.C. and
have the opportunity visit the Pentagon. The top scorers will also have the
chance to come to Washington and participate in the Fighter Pilot for a Day
program. They will receive F-22 and F-35 fighter briefings and have the
chance to fly state-of-the-art fighter simulators.

Individuals interested in taking the Air Force STEM 2020 Challenge can

College Forum
A panel of college representatives will be available at UMW on Thursday, March 8, 2011 from  7:00- 8:30 PM at
 Dodd Auditorium, George Washington Hall on the Fredericksburg campus of UMW.

The program is designed for high school juniors and parents.  Panelists will give an overview of an effective college search, the selective college admission process, how to prepare a winning college essay and the nuts and bolts of financial aid and scholarships.

Financial Aid Workshops

The Office of Financial Aid at the University of Mary Washington is pleased to announce upcoming financial aid workshops for high school seniors and their parents.    The general lecture-based sessions in January at the University of Mary Washington will include a description of financial aid, filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), cost of attendance (COA), expected family contribution (EFC), common filing errors and how to address special circumstances.  The February sessions, hosted in the computer lab at Combs Hall, Room 349, allows students and their parents to actually complete the FAFSA on-line.  A financial aid professional from UMW will be on site to assist and answer questions. 

Students and their parents are invited to participate.  Registration is required and some sessions may reach capacity.  Therefore, all potential participants are encouraged to register early on our Web site at http://adminfinance.umw.edu/financialaid/ and clicking on ‘How Will You Pay for College’  at the top of the page or the side tab marked ‘Financial Aid Workshops’

SAT Testing
When you sign up for the SAT test online, be sure to sign up for SAT I - the Reasoning Test. This is the standard college admissions test you need to take. SAT II are individual subject tests, and are only required for certain college applications. You may sign up at www.collegeboard.com
Changes to Contact Information
If your home, cell or work phone numbers, or your home address have changed , please inform the counseling center so that we have the most up to date information. If your address has changed, you will need to bring in proof of address, such as a copy of your mortgage/lease or a utility bill

Academic Letters
Mountain View High School awards academic letters to those students who earn a cumulative gpa of 3.5 or higher. The Academic Awards Ceremony is held each fall. Sophomores receive certificates and encouragement to continue their academic achievement. Juniors receive their academic letter, and seniors receive a bar for their academic letter.
